Approximately 4,000 years ago, the Chinese invented the Abacus. Written by Hua Yingchun, Chinese Abacus History provides a holistic account of the devices origin and development. This numeral frame was sold by a pharmacy in Sherman, N.Y., and cost $1.00. The 2.11-centimeter-wide wooden bead resembles the beads used today. The object is marked: Royal (/) Tot (/) EDUCATIONAL (/) TOY. The toy was designed to teach elementary counting, addition, subtraction, and simple fractions. Each cross rod carries 10 sliding wooden beads. According to Chinese history, the abacus as we know it was invented sometime during the Ming Dynasty by mathematician Cheng Dawei. Columns 8 through 13 are labeled in units of Japanese currency. The abacus should have 3 beads up in the farthest column left, four up in the next farthest, a blank column, a column with one bead up, two beads up in the next, and another blank column. Columns 1 to 6 are labeled in units of volume used to measure rice. A wooden cross bar colored white is painted with various characters labeling various columns of the abacus. This brightly painted example has a wooden frame, five metal horizontal cross rods, and a metal support at the back. This Japanese abacus is in the lid of a rosewood box. The numeral frame, which resembles a Russian abacus, was brought to the United States from Europe in the 1820s, and used in many classrooms to communicate basic arithmetic concepts to groups of students.īy the mid-20th century, numeral frames were sold for use by young children in the home. In the 1950s, tools long used to communicate elementary ideas about counting and arithmetic moved from the classroom into the home.
