The ambiance isn't just limited to the expansive and rustic Covenant estate, however. Related: Please Stop Making Multiplayer Horror Games ![]() Hearing the baying of monstrous hounds in the distance truly makes the player feel utterly surrounded, as if the creatures are roaming and waiting to find them and end their investigation. ![]() The sound design of Undying was (and still is even today) a highlight, constantly keeping the player suspicious and anxious of every corner with creaks, light winds, and distant howls. The disturbing and lasting impact of Undying isn't just from a story filled with darkness and grim mysteries, or its themes of betrayal and spiraling loss of humanity. The drama and lore surrounding the Covenant children's descent into eldritch horrors and Cthulhu-like madness runs deep, and provokes the player to think of what each of them may have grown into had they not been touched by the curse that eventually consumed them. The legacy passes to his children, who end up cursed in a way that is revealed through Jeremiah's investigations. ![]() The tale of the Covenant family in Clive Barker's Undying is tragic and dark, and it starts with a father that simply dug too deep into knowledge he probably shouldn't have had. Since it was rare to visually represent the dread horrors of a game through visual design alone, designers used other elements to unsettle the player, such as backstory, character, and - notably in the case of Undying - sound. An often underrated aspect of 2000s horror games were their film-inspired stories, particularly in how theme and narrative was often used due to technological limitations of the era. Undying is a very narrative-driven experience, and has a wonderfully disturbing story to tell. ![]()
